How to Keep Your Dog Calm During New Year's Eve Celebrations

Brilliant lights, champagne toasts, and witnessing the ball drop  what better way to ring in 2025 than by enjoying New Year's Eve fireworks illuminating the skies?

While fireworks are thrilling for us humans, they can be distressing for dogs and cats. Loud sounds such as fireworks or thunderstorms are responsible for nearly 1 in 5 pets, according to a survey by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals fund.

While we raise our glasses to the new year, here's how to keep your furry friends safe and happy:

Petting your dog

If feasible, your dog should remain at home with at least one person to comfort it in case of anxiety. Stay with your pet in a room with few windows and play soft music or a movie to distract from fireworks and other noises. A bit of affection can make a significant difference – one of the most effective ways to soothe your dog is to give it strong, firm pats to reassure it of your presence.

Thundershirt

Consider using anxiety-reducing devices such as a "Thundershirt," which functions like a weighted blanket to calm your dog.

Medication

For dogs that experience significant anxiety, your veterinarian can prescribe medications for situational anxiety. These can be helpful during loud events like thunderstorms and fireworks, or when you have to leave your dog alone for long durations.

Collar with ID

Ensure your pet always wears an ID tag, or consider getting a GPS locator for its collar if it doesn't have a microchip.

Take a walk before nighttime

Consider scheduling walks earlier in the day before the fireworks begin. Keep your dog on a leash if you anticipate fireworks being set off.

Most importantly, enjoy a safe and pleasant New Year's Eve with your loved ones and best friend!
